What Farming and Enterprise Look Like in Action.

In many low-income countries, farming is most common on a small, household scale. Farmers work hard but still struggle to meet their families’ daily needs with only a few cows or a small plot of land. They lack product volume to access fair markets, new industry tools, or training.

That’s where our partners step in! They provide livestock, climate-smart training, links to better market opportunities, and access to farming cooperatives. With support from Tearfund donors, farmers are equipped to grow a sustainable income and lift themselves out of poverty.

Watch: A 'legend-dairy' difference in Sri Lanka

As seen in the video, our partner Yugashakthi has helped smallholder dairy farmers increase their earnings from $20 to $150 a month! And this is just one example of transformation from around the world.

Without Tearfund’s help, we would not be eating three meals a day or consider the next level of education for my children. This income means we can live.”

Empowering farmers across the Pacific

We’re seeing transformational change for farming families in vulnerable and remote communities through sustainable farming practices and enterprise training. Our partners in Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, the Philippines, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands are leading development in their regions with culturally relevant, climate smart solutions.

A New Zealand farmer visits Sri Lanka

In this video, Ross Wallis shares about his time visiting farmers in Sri Lanka who are part of our partner’s dairy development programme. “We’d seen the work firsthand, and the impact it made in people’s lives, transforming communities... it’s high impact and efficient use of resources, and that’s why we’re involved.”

Coffee growing helped pay for my children’s school fees, and helped me receive the support I needed to care for my child who has a severe disability

I have seen the benefits of doing agricultural training already. I learnt how to plant crops like taro, peanuts, ginger, chilli ,and spring onion, to provide for my family and to sell at the market. I also learnt how to make use of available materials to make compost and fertiliser. My family and I now receive a consistent income.

Because of them (Tearfund’s partner), I now have four cows and my income has doubled. Before they came along, I had one cow, but it was only used as a secondary income for my family. Now dairying is my primary income.

Every $1 you give, has $3 of impact

Our work in Farming and Enterprise programme coupled with our Modern Slavery work across Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and Sri Lanka, has delivered such strong results that MFAT is backing it further. For every $1 we raise, they’ll give $2 to expand this successful work through the SAFE (Safe Aware Free and Empowered) programme.

With your support today, Tearfund’s Farming and Enterprise programme will help more vulnerable families build sustainable livelihoods, strengthen their communities, and grow thriving businesses.

Together, we’re planting seeds of hope and creating positive change that will last for generations to come.
