South Asia Floods Appeal

Right now, people across South Asia are grappling with one of the worst storms in decades. In Sri Lanka, where Tearfund has worked for over 10 years, more than 1.15 million people across the country are devastated by floods, heavy rains, and landslides. In Indonesia, the situation is much the same, with heavy rains flooding villages and strong winds ripping roofs off homes across the island of Sumatra.

We have Christian partners in both nations ready to respond with warm meals, pantry staples, and drinking water, as well as personal products like soap, toothbrushes, nappies, and period products. These items help families meet their most basic needs for nourishment and health.

What’s happening in South Asia?

  • The Sri Lankan government has declared a state of emergency across the entire country (all 25 districts) and have asked for outside support to cope with the devastation.
  • Around 5.7 million people in Sumatra, Indonesia are impacted or displaced from their homes and need outside support immediately.
  • Essential infrastructure, such as communications, electricity, and roads, is severely damaged in both nations, making it challenging to access remote communities.

How is Tearfund responding?

Our Christian partners are already working in Sri Lanka and Indonesia and ready to get started. With your help today, we can come together to provide lifesaving food and hygiene supplies, which are absolutely critical in the days and weeks to come.

Pray with us:

  • Pray that lives may be saved and those missing would be found safe
  • Pray that emergency response efforts would move forward quickly and effectively
  • Pray for our Christian partners on the ground for strength and safety for their teams

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. We will not fear, though the earth gives way and the mountains fall into the heart of the sea.
