You can be there for families in their time of need

When disasters strike around the world, we provide opportunities for New Zealanders to give life-saving support to families whose lives have been devastated.

Recently, our generous supporters have helped provide vital medical support in north Gaza, rebuilt sanitation infrastructure after the Myanmar earthquakes and provided water and supplies to displaced families in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Significantly, they’ve also been there for communities who are often forgotten by the world’s media, but whose needs are no less significant. In the video below, you’ll meet Bereket who is the Executive Director of TDA (our Christian partner in Ethiopia). With the support of people like you, Bereket’s team has been able to distribute life-saving food to 9000 drought-affected people in southern Ethiopia, as well as goats and seeds to help people rebuild their livelihoods.

These are just a few examples of how New Zealanders have been able to help families around the world in their time of crisis. Last year, our donors sent emergency relief and recovery support to 63,771 people across 11 countries, and together, we could reach thousands more in the years ahead.

And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me’.

A multi-level response

Tearfund invites our supporters to join us in implementing a three-stage approach to ensure holistic and sustainable emergency responses.

Respond to the immediate needs of disaster-affected communities (e.g. food, water, and shelter).

Rebuild livelihoods with an underlying build-back better policy, focusing on climate resilience and sustainability.

Tearfund acknowledges that disasters will become more prevalent and severe and that investment in preparation is proven to be significantly more cost effective and impactful. The World Bank estimates that every dollar spent on disaster risk reduction, saves seven in relief and repairs. As such, Tearfund will increasingly invest in preventative work–including Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR), Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), and peace-building programming where applicable. Tearfund will invest in preparing communities to be able to withstand and respond to disasters and conflict.

Responding to disasters across the world

Right now, our supporters are having a global impact. From the world’s largest refugee camp in Bangladesh, to war-torn Gaza and drought-affected Ethiopia, your support is equipping partners around the world to help communities recover from disasters. See them all on the map below.

Raising awareness about the East Africa Hunger Crisis with Newshub

To raise awareness about the hunger crisis in Ethiopia, Tearfund travelled with Newshub to the region in mid 2024. You can see their coverage from the ground in this video.

Since then, thousands of New Zealanders have donated to provide emergency food assistance to 9000 of the most vulnerable people and goats and seeds to help people rebuild their livelihoods. This response has been so effective that 70% of recipients no longer need any aid at all.

I have received maize and oil which will feed my children and help sustain us. I thank TDA and Tearfund New Zealand who are saving our lives during this hard time!

Meet our Partner in Iraq

“Knowing what they’ve come through, makes the joy all the more significant.”

As well as meeting immediate needs, our disaster and conflict work also includes helping communities sustainably rebuild and recover. In Iraq, our partner helps families overcome the trauma of their experiences by providing access to counselling and psychosocial support. They recently achieved a 75% reduction rate in trauma symptoms. Don’t miss this inspiring video introducing their work.
