Flash floods and mudslides have swept through communities in central Nepal, causing widespread devastation.

Homes, roads and vital infrastructure have been destroyed, and the death toll continues to climb. Families have watched their homes and possessions wash away with many also desperately searching for loved ones.

Cut off and facing this widespread damage, these communities need humanitarian assistance quickly. Watch Ian McInnes (CEO) explain how you can help provide emergency support in this time of crisis.

Our response

One of Tearfund's long-standing partners, Share and Care, has been working in some of the communities impacted by this disaster for the last ten years and knows the area very well. Through this work, we know that these communities are already vulnerable to poverty and human trafficking and that events like this can further increase the risks they face.

Through our partners on the ground, we're assessing the situation and developing a response plan to ensure we can support affected communities in the most effective way possible.

What’s happening in Nepal?

A major flash flood struck the Bhote Koshi River Basin in the Nepal–Tibet border region at about 9am on 26 August 2026.

The flooding has significantly damaged homes, markets, transport infrastructure and hydropower projects.

Some indications suggest that this event could be the worst flooding disaster in the country since the 1990s. Humanitarian needs are significant.

The worst-affected areas include Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading and surrounding districts along the Bhote Koshi and Trishuli river systems.

The death toll continues to climb and hundreds of people from around the world have been reported missing.

God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.
