A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has hit Turkey and Syria killing thousands and injuring many more.

The death toll is expected to rise much higher. Tearfund is assessing the situation and we are working alongside our partners to mount an effective response. Please pray for people in the region who have lost loved ones, and face sleeping outdoors in sub-zero temperatures.

You can help get emergency supplies to earthquake-affected people in need.

What’s happening in Turkey and Syria?

  • A 7.8 magnitude earthquake, followed by a 7.5 quake, has levelled more than 3,000 buildings across Turkey and Syria. The World Health Organisation believes the death toll will grow eightfold to an estimated 30,000 at least.
  • The first quake is believed to be Turkey's largest disaster since 1939.
  • Many will be forced to endure below-freezing temperatures sleeping outdoors, including millions of refugees in Turkey and those displaced in Syria.

Your immediate response will help provide life-sustaining supplies (such as shelter and clothing) to devastated communities.

Will you please give to help people in the aftermath of this disaster?
