Transforming communities through their local church

At the heart of Tearfund’s work is a simple belief: people know their own communities best. Church and Community brings this belief to life by walking alongside local churches as they support those around them, in some of the world’s most challenging contexts.

In June 2025, we began working with two trusted partners in South Sudan. Together, we are equipping local pastors to pray, plan, and lead their congregations in practical action, as they respond to the greatest needs in their communities.


Through Scripture-based training and practical tools, churches are identifying priorities, restoring relationships, and strengthening their communities by building on local strengths and resources. This is grass-roots love-in-action at its finest.

The research shows that when the church works with the community in this way it has a transformative impact. It is an effective and sustainable solution to overcoming poverty.
