What’s happening in Tonga?

  • A large eruption of Hunga Tonga–Hunga Haʻapai volcano on January 15, 2022, has caused ash fall and triggered a tsunami.

  • Ashfall has likely contaminated water supplies, damaged or destroyed food crops, and affected air quality.

  • Communications and infrastructure have been damaged.

  • Tearfund’s partners are assessing the need and plan to provide food, water and other emergency supplies.

Your immediate response will help provide lifesaving supplies to devastated communities.

Tearfund has established partners in Tonga who have responded to recent disasters, so they are well-positioned to respond to those in need.

While communication is currently difficult, funds donated now mean our partners can act swiftly to bring relief to affected Tongan communities.

Pray with us

1. Pray for the immediate relief and recovery efforts on the ground. That communications can be quickly restored on both the main and outer islands and that help can reach those most affected.

2. Pray for clean water supplies, food security, and safe shelter for those with damaged homes, both now and in the long term. 80% of Tongan families rely on crops for both day-to-day use and income, crops which have been severely impacted by seawater and ash.

3. Pray for the people – for families in Tonga, separated from loved ones, worried about immediate support and their livelihoods. Pray for Tongan families in New Zealand and around the world, anxious about loved ones at home.
