Host a big quiz

Get together with your friends, family and church for an epic evening of poverty-fighting fun.

Until the end of the year, churches and other groups up and down the country will be taking part in the biggest multi-venue, nationwide quiz ever.

We'd love for you to join!

It's very easy to run

We’ll provide everything you need, including answer sheets and a USB with a ready-made quiz video. You can tailor the quiz to suit your church, serve food and drink and make it as big or as small as you like.

‘The Big Quiz has been hugely popular in the UK. We are stoked to be able to bring it here to NZ.’

Help people like Pathmanathan

Every dollar raised will transform the lives of people like Pathmanathan from Sri Lanka. She lost her husband in the brutal Sri Lankan civil war. After he died, her and her children were just making it by as she started working as a cook. Then she became chronically ill and working became difficult. Tearfund’s local partner heard about this and introduced her to another way of providing for her family. Now her family are thriving.

FAQS

What will I get in the pack?

A USB stick containing the quiz film and printable resources to promote your event. We’ll also include answer sheets, team name cards and donation pledge cards. These packs will be send out in August.

Is the quiz family friendly?

We’ve designed the quiz to suit all ages and span the generations, from high school upwards. Subjects will include general knowledge, sport, food and drink, nature, famous quotes, geography, film and TV, sport and music... and a picture round, of course!

Can I use the quiz as a community outreach event?

Definitely, the quiz is a great way of inviting your local community into your church. We will provide flyers and posters you can use to advertise your event.

Can I change the running order?

The main quiz film contains 8 rounds of 10 questions. You won’t be able to change the running order for these rounds. We do provide 2 bonus rounds that you can introduce when you would like to.

What time will we need to start the quiz?

If you are following the recommended eight rounds, the quiz is likely to take an hour and forty-five minutes. We recommend that you start at 7.45pm – then you’ll be finished by 9.30pm. But it’s up to you!

Where will the money raised go?

Your Big Quiz Night will help transform the lives of people like Pathmanathan and her two children who lost their father in the Sri Lankan civil war.

Is the Big Quiz Night on a specific date?

After the latest government announcement to move to Level 3, we've decided to make it easier and more flexible for you to still host this fabulous event. That means you can choose to host your Big Quiz Night on any day from now until December 31.

How many teams can we have?

As many as you like – this is a great opportunity to invite friends, family and people from your wider community. The more mixed the teams are in terms of age, interests and so on, the more questions they’ll be able to answer. We recommend four to six people per team where possible.

What if we don’t have internet at our venue, or a screen and projector?

The quiz film is offline available via the USB drive, so no internet required. If you don’t have a screen and projector, don’t worry, you can still take part. Paper versions of the quiz are in the pack with an answer sheet, so all you have to do is nominate a Quiz Master for the night to host the rounds.

Can we serve food and drink at our quiz?

It’s entirely up to you and what you think is best – take a look at our guide for ideas about how to plan your event. Feel free to sell cakes or add any other fundraising ideas that you like.

How much should I charge?

We recommend a donation of $10 per person, but it’s up to you. If you’re putting on food and drink then you might want to ask for more to help cover the costs. Have a look at our fundraising guide if you need any more guidance.

Will participants be able to claim a donation tax return?

You can only claim a donation tax return on voluntary donations, not on payment for goods and services. Throughout the evening there will be a pledge card where you can make a donation, this is valid for a tax return.

Will I still receive a paper host pack if COVID restrictions are still in place?

We hope to have the option to send you a paper host pack in the mail again soon, once the Level 3 restrictions are lifted. However, in the meantime, we have prepared a digital host pack, which we will email this to you from August 20 so you can continue to prepare for your big night! Once we have the go-ahead to send post from Auckland again, we plan to mail you a paper host pack.
