Kiwi relief pilot with Mercy Air, Dan Yeoman, told this story following Cyclone Idai.

“A grandmother I helped spent three days and two nights up a tree holding on for dear life. She watched as other members of her family succumbed to fatigue and fell into the flood waters never to be seen again. Mozambicans are incredibly strong, resilient people, but Cyclone Idai was brutal.”

Meet Ana.

Ana, 42, has five children. Her husband died in 2008, leaving her with very little. She sells bananas to keep herself and her kids fed. When the cyclone hit, the banana crop was destroyed, leaving her without an income. As for her home, she says that it was destroyed in the second wave of the cyclone. “When it hit the second time, the home started to fall down, so we ran! The entire house collapsed. We lost everything. All around us, everything was destroyed. We were afraid for our lives, but mostly I was terrified for my children. When we have food, I prefer to give it to them. I am hungry.”

Help support families like Ana's during this time of desperate need.
