In a blistering, breezy summer, full of the greens and yellows of trees and sunshine, the children of Ban Naklang village find joy playing with their animals.

During the Covid-19 pandemic, which has affected lives even in their remote community, the children’s playtime is often spent with their pets.

In the village, most families are farmers, growing crops like corn. Many young children are responsible for caring for their family’s animals.

Weeview is five and attends a Compassion child development centre. He spends most days playing with his best friend. A buffalo is an unusual playmate, but their creature is dear to Weeview's heart.

Weeview has learned to care for his family’s buffalos since he was very young and has built a strong connection with his favourite buffalo, a female called Mae-Preaw.

“She is always tender and loving towards me and I always play in the water with her when she is taking a bath,” says Weeview.
