A Hope More Powerful than Poverty is a tour that will show you the true impact of sponsoring a child. You will walk away feeling challenged, inspired and encouraged.

We are privileged to have a variety of speakers. With former sponsored child, now a Pastor of pastors, Richmond Wandera from Uganda, humanitarian photographer Helen Manson, and passionate advocate for anti-trafficking, Kerrie Palma.

Richmond Wandera

When Richmond was eight, his father was tragically murdered. At that moment he lost all hope of a life worth living.

Alongside his mother, he was left to care for his six siblings and spent countless hours of each day wandering in search of food for his family. When he was taken into the Compassion programme and sponsored by Heather, a 15-year-old student, Richmond began to see his life differently. The financial support, love, education and healthcare that Richmond received through sponsorship enabled him to begin a relationship with God and reach his full potential.

After finishing school he gained a degree in accounting. He then received a scholarship and went on to complete a master’s in theology. He has since worked to provide free training for pastors in Uganda and founded the Pastors’ Discipleship Network Programme which has created mentoring relationships between pastors in America and over 3000 pastors in Uganda!

Richmond is now a sought-after preacher and speaker and has shared his remarkable story across the world at different churches and conferences.

Kerrie Palma

Kerrie leads the Church relationship team at Tearfund and brings her 33 years of Christian life and ministry to the role.

Kerrie has always lived out a big-hearted response to God in her ordinary life which challenges others to live a risky faith. Recently she spent a season living in Kolkata, India, and through this experience, her understanding of global issues of injustice have been deepened.

Kerrie is a natural storyteller and extremely relatable. She takes her listeners on a journey that reaches into their context and calls them forward into the world.

She will be talking about The Trafficked Fisherboys of Lake Volta. Lake Volta in Ghana is the world’s largest man-made lake sustaining thousands of lives, but its fishing industry is built on the backs of vulnerable children. Entire communities make their living on boats or in the fish markets, but hundreds of fisherboys are not there by choice. These trafficked boys were helped out of poverty through sponsorship and support.

If you would like to work in partnership with Tearfund to help release children from poverty in Jesus’ name, host a Hope More Powerful than Poverty event at your church. Email our National Church Engagement Manager, Kerrie Palma.

Helen Manson

Helen Manson has recently returned from living in Uganda for six years.

Her photography work has taken her around the world to some of the most challenging environments documenting famine, refugee settlements and disaster zones. She’s travelled to more than 40 countries including Iraq, Democratic Republic of Congo, Lebanon, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia and India, photographing global humanitarian issues for charities and not-for-profit organisations worldwide.

When she’s not shooting in the field, you’ll find her doing school drop-offs and pickups, folding laundry and jumping on the trampoline with her three little kids.
