Tackling Modern Slavery

Today, more people are trapped in modern slavery than ever before - and nearly 60% are in our Asia-Pacific neighbourhood.

Tearfund supporters like you are taking a stand against this abuse and injustice. Together we are working with our partners (like the one in this video) to prevent human trafficking and support the prosecution of traffickers. Right now, we’re assisting 120 vulnerable communities, across five countries, build resilience against exploitation- with your help we can reach another 30 at risk communities by 2030.

A multi-level response

Communities understand their own challenges better than anyone. That’s why, with our donors, we resource our local partners to develop culturally sustainable solutions to tackling human trafficking threats in their communities.

Our experienced partners on the ground take a comprehensive approach built on the 5 P's:

Reducing vulnerability to trafficking and exploitation by addressing the root causes. This includes awareness-raising and community mobilisation, increasing income generation and education opportunities and supporting women's empowerment initiatives.

Investigating both domestic and cross-border cases of trafficking and exploitation; facilitating the rescue of victims; and prosecuting perpetrators through strengthening judicial and financial systems and holding these to account

Providing trauma-informed aftercare services for survivors of trafficking and exploitation for recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration into the community

Supporting research, policy development and advocacy to strengthen institutions and policy mechanisms to deliver justice and protect victims

Supporting inter-agency collaboration and strong partnerships to resist the co-ordinated networks of traffickers

A multi-country response

Latest impact video from our partner in Fiji

Our anti-modern slavery partner in Fiji is Homes of Hope, a Christian organisation walking alongside women and children recovering from forced sexual exploitation, with 80% of survivors reporting a positive change as they rebuild their lives.

At a systemic level, Homes of Hope sits on Fiji’s government steering group, where they advise on combating trafficking, and provide trafficking awareness training.

Homes of Hope created the highly successful Thumbs Up! child safeguarding curriculum, recognised by the Fiji government and rolled out to 361 schoolteachers. Thumbs Up! is now being implemented by our modern slavery partner in the Solomons Islands

New Zealand business sees the impact in Nepal

When women’s fashion brand Flo & Frankie launched, they created a philanthropy label, Flo Gives Back. Inspired by the transformation they saw while visiting our modern slavery work in Nepal, they chose to support our partner Share and Care. By assisting at-risk women to create empowered communities that protect their families from exploitation and slavery, together we are seeing women drive their own social and economic development.

SAFE: A powerful combination

The SAFE (Safe Aware Free and Empowered) programme combines our modern slavery prevention with farming and enterprise initiatives, giving vulnerable communities sustainable future options free from exploitation in Fiji, the Solomon Islands, and Myanmar. Our work has delivered such strong results that MFAT is backing it further.

Every $1 we can send to the SAFE projects will be matched with $2 by MFAT, vastly increasing what we can accomplish.
