Meet Chimini

In Nepal, it started with a community...

At 17 years old, Chimini was still a child when she married her husband. What other options did she have to support herself? Born into Nepal’s lowest caste, her lot in life felt inevitable. She was a talented carpet maker, but who would buy carpets from a girl like her living in a remote village far from the bustling city anyway? she wondered.

Chimini went on to have two children and worried daily about providing for them. When someone told her about an opportunity to earn a good living as a domestic worker in the Middle East, it seemed like a stroke of luck. It wasn’t. Chimini survived years of mental and physical abuse from her host family before managing to escape back to Nepal broke and traumatised.

Share and Care Nepal (Tearfund’s partner) heard Chimini’s story and invited her to join a Self Help Group where she began to heal from her trauma, largely because of the incredible community of women that surrounded her. She was recommended for a business loan, which she used to buy five goats. She raised the goats and sold the offspring, which provided a sustainable source of income. Her daughter even received a scholarship through the group to attend school!

Today, Chimini is the chairperson of the Self Help Group and a respected leader in her community. She still weaves her beautiful carpets. Her story is a walking reminder of the change that happens when women get together and support each other in friendship and business. â€‹Chimini found healing and renewed confidence through the support of the women in her Self Help Group.

Here's how Self Help Groups work:

A safe place to grow their savings.

A supportive encouraging community.

An opportunity to learn valuable life skills.

For $10, you can send one woman to attend a Self Help Group
for a year.

coffee bean.

With each new day, Yenenesh woke up and wondered how she would feed her children, until her Self Help Group showed her the power of saving.

In Sri Lanka, it started with
a dream.

A dream to see women and entire communities restored and flourishing after the devastating brutal civil war and 2004 tsunami.
