Ruth Callanta
Stories of hope and transformation
There are some people on this planet that you cannot afford to miss when they are in town; Ruth Callanta is one of those remarkable individuals. This little woman has a huge vision that has seen hundreds-of-thousands of poor Filipinos set free from poverty and introduced to Jesus in the process.
Ruth’s CV is pages long, she is an advisor to the President of the Philippines on poverty issues, established a Postgraduate Business School and as a student, was locked up by Marcos when advising poor farmers of their rights. In 2005 Ruth was named Woman Entrepreneur of the Year.
Ruth is President of TEAR Fund’s partner in the Philippines, the Centre for Community Transformation (CCT) whose 700 staff run a Microenterprise programme currently ministering to around 130,000 families. The projects’ loan programme works through 6000 self-help groups which operate like churches. These groups have recorded over 15,000 first time commitments to Jesus this year.
Working out of poverty
CCT tackles the hard problems, illiteracy, drug use and corruption, all of which ensnare the poor. Ruth has more sparkle and energy than a fire cracker, don’t miss the opportunity to hear about a viable, sustainable answer to create a hope and a future for the poor.
