Robert Mugabe has begun his sixth term as president of Zimbabwe following the country’s elections which have been condemned internationally as a sham. Please pray for Zimbabwe that violence would not erupt as a result of the elections and that God’s justice would prevail.
Mugabe, initially hailed as a hero has ruthlessly ruled the country since coming to power in 1980. He won the election on Sunday using a campaign of murder, violence and intimidation against many of those who voted against him or opposed his regime.
Mugabe’s intimidation tactics caused opposition leader Morgan Tsvangirai to pull out of the presidential race early for fear of violence against his voters. In an earlier vote, Tsvangirai polled ahead of Mugabe but did not have more than 50 per cent of the vote forcing the presidential run-off.
The country’s economy is in tatters with an inflation rate higher than 66000 per cent. This is causing desperation among the people as global food costs rise. One New Zealand dollar is equivalent to $8,078,626,336.60 Zimbabwean.
Please pray for a peaceful resolution and that a fair power-sharing deal can be struck between the ruling parties. Also pray that the country and the people will be restored.
